             Workshops: Previous

Bannockburn Art School: 3-7 October 2022 The Creativity Process: From the initial Idea Seed to a painting. In this 5 day workshop we will focus on developing a vague idea for a representational work into a painting/drawing. The classes will be a mix of theory/examples and ‘doing’. We will work through issues which may be holding you back from expressing your creativity, and how to step into it, rather than leap off the high dive board. We will also consider your style, and where it comes from and why it is important, and how much planning you might do for a painting and how much you leave to serendipity. This year the course will be for Visual artists was it also covers proposition, composition and ratios, scale and placement.

    My experience

In my own journey of developing my art, I started with technique and for a long time I didn’t want to ‘add creativity’ or even ‘change nature’ because I didn’t think I was good enough. In this workshop, I want to encourage you to think about building CREATIVITY and TECHNIQUE and CONFIDENCE at the same time – even if you are not quite ready to leap off the representational path.

        UNDER THE SURFACE:

During my Artists residency in Rotorua over the summer of 2020 I led some two day workshops that involved walking and experiencing the environs of Rotorua about the landscape and local culture and myths and memories. Specifically we discussed the impact of the things in nature we cannot necessarily see, and then helped the participants experience and think about the landscape differently, and then return to the studio and paint based upon their impressions and experiences.

Some of my own art works are shown below – undertaken during the residency in Rotorua and affected by the geology and the cultural myths.

In this 5 painting work I explore and illustrate the geological forces in the Taupo Volcanic zone where Rotorua sits and how it is connected to Whakaari (White Island) which had recently erupted with tragic results.
